VDAC1 is present in both the outer mitochondrial membrane and the plasma membrane, serving different functions.

It is expressed in heart, liver, and muscle tissues. The VDAC1 gene is conserved in chimpanzee, dog, cow, mouse, rat, chicken, and zebrafish. Human VDAC1 share 99% identity with the mouse homolog and 85% identity with its zebrafish homolog.
